The phrase "free floor plan software" hides a lot. Most tools called free give you 3 designs and slap a watermark on your export. Others are 7-day trials in a raincoat. A few are genuinely, unlimited free - and those are worth knowing about.
I run Ritn3D, which is on this list. I built the free editor because when I was starting out I could not find a floor plan tool that was actually free without hitting a wall on plan 3 or export 1. So I am biased - but I have tried hard to be honest about where the other tools win, and where Ritn3D's own limits are.
Here is the actual state of "free floor plan software" in 2026.
What "free" actually means
Before we look at tools, four things to watch for in any free floor plan tool:
- Plan limit - can you create unlimited plans, or does it stop at a small number?
- Watermark - is your exported PNG/PDF stamped with the tool's logo?
- Export limit - can you re-export the same plan as many times as you want, or is there a per-level/per-project export fee?
- Feature gate - is the free tier a real editor or just a preview that unlocks with payment?
If any one of those is capped, "free" is really "free trial with no time limit." Which is fine, but know what you are signing up for.
Ritn3D

I am biased here, so let me lead with the limits.
Where Ritn3D loses. The AI 3D conversion is capped at 3 renders per month on free - that is the real paywall. If you convert lots of plans to 3D you will hit the limit. The furniture catalog for placing 3D furniture is Pro-only. No CAD export (DWG/DXF). No collaboration or multi-user editing. And you do need an account - drawing requires a free Google or email sign-in, so it is not a zero-friction "open the URL and go" tool the way Sweet Home 3D Online is.
Where Ritn3D wins. The 2D editor is free forever with no plan limit and no watermark. You can draw as many plans as you want and export unlimited PNGs and PDFs. Tap-A tap-B wall placement, 4 door types, arc walls, auto-room detection, alignment guides, undo/redo, auto-save drafts, and you can trace over any image or PDF from your phone gallery. Works on phone and browser with one account, and signing in takes about 10 seconds with Google or email - no card, no phone number, no verification wall.
Best for. Anyone who wants to draw floor plans without hitting arbitrary caps, homeowners planning renovations, renters sketching furniture layouts, or people who want optional AI 3D conversion in the same tool without switching apps.
Planner 5D
Free: unlimited projects, watermark on every render, low-res, ~50% of catalog locked Paid: $4.99/mo Premium or $59.99/year (roughly $5/mo annual) Web + iOS + Android
Planner 5D is the granddaddy of consumer floor plan tools. Big furniture catalog, polished 3D renders, been around forever.
Where it wins. Enormous furniture catalog (thousands of items), photorealistic rendering that looks better than most competitors, mature manual design UI. Decent AI features layered on (Room Scan on iOS).
Where it loses. The free tier is real-free-in-name-only. Watermarks on every render in the free tier, plus low-res only. About half of the furniture and material catalog is locked behind Premium. Ads in the free tier.
Best for. People who want the biggest furniture catalog and can accept paying eventually. Not the pick if watermark-free is what you want.
RoomSketcher
Free: 10-project archive, watermarked 3D snapshots, $38/level to export floor plans Paid: Pro $144/year ($12/mo, uses 5 credits/mo not unlimited); VIP/Team $70/mo monthly or $420/year ($35/mo) Web + iOS + Android
RoomSketcher is aimed at real estate agents and interior designers, and the pricing shows.
Where it wins. Real estate floor plan output looks clean and professional. Good for producing listing-ready 2D plans with dimensions.
Where it loses. The free tier is more of a preview than a working tool - your 10 projects live in an archive, 3D snapshots are watermarked, and exporting a floor plan costs $38 per level (pay-per-export on free). Even the Pro plan is a credits system (5 credits per month), not unlimited. If you want to use RoomSketcher for real work you are paying $144/yr minimum. Not really usable long-term as a free tool.
Best for. Real estate agents evaluating whether to buy the paid plan. Not a real free option.
SmartDraw
Free: 7-day trial only (exports watermarked during trial), then $10.95/mo billed annually ($9.95/mo intro for new customers) Web + desktop
SmartDraw is a general-purpose diagramming tool that happens to include floor plans. Not really a free tool.
Where it wins. Broad diagramming coverage - if you also need flowcharts, org charts, and network diagrams, one subscription covers everything. Good template library.
Where it loses. The free version is a 7-day trial with watermarked exports. After that you pay $10.95/mo (billed annually), or $9.95/mo as an intro price for new customers. The interface is more diagramming than floor plan - fewer floor-plan-specific tools (no auto-room detection for example). Not what you want if floor plans are your only need.
Best for. People who need general diagramming with floor plans as one use case. Skip if floor plans are the main thing.
Sweet Home 3D
Free: fully free, open source (GPL), unlimited everything Desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux) + browser version at sweethome3d.com/SweetHome3DOnline.jsp
Sweet Home 3D is the OG open-source floor plan tool. Been around since 2006, still active.
Where it wins. Genuinely, unlimited, no-strings free. Open source under GPL. Full-featured desktop editor plus a browser version now. Import/export multiple formats. Community-supported so no upsell pressure ever.
Where it loses. UI is dated - it looks like a 2010 desktop app because that is when it was designed. The free tier is desktop and browser only; the official iOS and Android apps are paid, so "free forever" does not extend to your phone. Rendering is basic compared to modern tools. Learning curve is steeper than the app-store-friendly tools.
Best for. Desktop users who want a completely free tool with no paywalls anywhere, people who care about open source, anyone who does not mind an older UI in exchange for zero commercial pressure.

The free floor plan software category has one genuinely-free open-source option that runs on desktop and in the browser (Sweet Home 3D), one genuinely-free mobile/web option (Ritn3D's editor), and a lot of trial-in-disguise options.
If you want unlimited free floor plan drawing on your phone or browser, Ritn3D is the only serious pick right now - and I am fully aware I am biased since I built it. If you want unlimited free on a desktop with no company behind it, Sweet Home 3D still wins. If you want polished furniture and are ok paying eventually, Planner 5D is fine.
