The floor plan is only as accurate as the measurements behind it. Get the measurements wrong and everything downstream is wrong too - the furniture won't fit, the renovation won't work, the 3D walkthrough will feel off. Good news: measuring a room is not hard, but it is easy to skip corners and end up with a plan that is 15cm off in the wrong places.

Here is how to do it properly the first time.

Tape vs laser: what to use

Tape measure. A steel tape measure (not cloth) is fine for most residential rooms. Cost: $10-20. Any tape from a hardware store works if it is at least 8m/25ft long. Keep the tape flat against the wall and straight - a bowed tape reads long. If you are working alone, hook the tape onto something at one end (a doorframe, a nail, a heavy book) so you don't have to hold both ends.

Laser distance meter. A laser distance meter (LDM) shoots a beam at the opposite wall and reads the distance instantly. Cost: $40-70 for a basic Bosch, Leica, or Stanley. Accurate to plus or minus 1.5mm over 20m. Works from any point in the room, no bowing, no second person needed, no reaching. For anything bigger than one or two rooms, a laser saves real time.

Which one to get. If you measure once and never again, a tape is fine. If you plan to do multiple rooms or come back to this later, buy the laser. $50 is nothing compared to the time and rework it saves.

Don't use. Cloth tapes (stretch), phone-only measuring apps as your only source of truth (the AR ones can be 5-10cm off), or the "step it out" method (fine for rough vibes, useless for a real plan).

What to measure

For a basic floor plan, you need:

  • Wall lengths - every wall segment, corner to corner
  • Ceiling height - floor to ceiling
  • Door widths - the opening width, not the door itself (include the frame)
  • Door positions - distance from one corner of the wall to the near edge of the door
  • Window widths and heights - opening dimensions
  • Window positions - distance from corner and height from floor
  • Wall thickness at doorways or wall ends - measured from the doorframe

For a construction-quality plan add: outlet and switch positions, HVAC vents, wall thickness across each wall (usually only matters at end conditions and doorways).

For 3D printing or visualization only, ceiling height + walls + doors + windows is enough.

The order to measure in

Doing things in the right order stops you from missing measurements and having to come back:

1. Sketch first. Before touching a tape, draw a rough sketch of the room on paper or in the Ritn3D editor. It does not need to be to scale - just a top-down view with each wall labeled A, B, C, D. This is your scratchpad.

2. Ceiling height. One measurement. Do it once at each end of the room to check for slope in old houses.

3. Perimeter walls, one at a time. Start at one corner and work clockwise. Measure each wall segment corner to corner and write the number on your sketch next to that wall.

4. Doors and windows on each wall. As you go around, for each door or window: width of opening, then distance from the nearest corner to the edge of the opening. Write both numbers on the sketch.

5. Interior walls last. After the perimeter, measure any interior walls that divide the room. For each: length, and distance from a perimeter wall to fix its position.

6. Double-check by cross-measuring. In a rectangular room, opposite walls should be equal length. If wall A is 4.20m and the opposite wall is 4.35m, something is wrong or the room is not actually rectangular. Measure the diagonals - in a true rectangle they are equal. Off by more than 2-3cm and the room is not square.

How to record measurements

Two options that both work:

On paper. Print or draw a sketch and write numbers directly on it. Fast, no tech, hard to lose if you take a photo of the sketch when done.

In the app as you go. Open Ritn3D's editor, draw walls in roughly the right shape, and after each wall tap it and type the real measurement in. The wall snaps to the exact length. By the time you are done measuring you also have a digital plan. This is the fastest workflow if you have your phone free.

Either way: record the units. Meters and cm, or feet and inches, don't mix. Half the "why is my plan wrong" issues trace back to one wall being logged in inches and the next in cm.

Common mistakes

Measuring through baseboards. Baseboards add 1-2cm to your wall reading if the tape hooks on them. Measure to the actual wall face, not to the baseboard.

Not accounting for wall thickness. Interior walls in most houses are 8-15cm thick. If you measure only room interiors, the thickness gets lost. For a floor plan, either measure wall thicknesses at door openings (where you can see them), or assume a standard 10cm and note it.

Skipping the diagonals check. The diagonal check is the fastest way to catch a bad measurement. Two minutes, catches most errors.

Recording sloppy numbers. "About 3 meters" is not a measurement. If the tape says 3.02m, write 3.02m. Round only at the end when you know you are done.

Measuring alone with a tape when you should use a laser. If you are stretching the tape 5m across a room and holding both ends, buy a laser. You are losing 15% of every reading.

Forgetting to check for weird corners. Old houses have rooms that are not quite rectangular. Measure both diagonals and if they differ by more than 3cm, treat the room as a quadrilateral and measure all four wall lengths plus one diagonal - that fully defines it.

From measurements to floor plan

Once you have measurements, drawing the plan is the easy part.

Options in rough order of speed:
